Strengthening Families

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a science-based family skills training program designed to increase resilience and reduce risk factors for behavioral, emotional, academic and social problems.

Two programs are offered by Rim Family Services. SFP Elementary is for parents of children aged 6-12. The Elementary SFP curriculum includes 14-week parent only program where parents learn to increase desired behaviors in children by using attention and rewards, clear communication, effective discipline, substance use education, problem solving and limit setting.
Starting January 2008 our SFP Elementary will be
offered Mondays from 10AM - 11:30AM.

The SFP Teen is offered on Monday nights from 6 - 8PM.

There is a one time $10.00 registration fee for either Strengthening Families program.

The Teen Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 is a parent, youth, and family skills-building curriculum designed to:
* prevent teen substance abuse and other behavior problems,
* strengthen parenting skills
* build family strengths

The program is delivered with seven sessions for parents, youth, and families using realistic videos, role-playing, discussions, learning games, and family projects.

SFP 10-14 has been proven effective in
* delaying the onset of adolescent substance use,
* lowering levels of aggression
* increasing the resistance to peer pressure in youth
* increasing the ability of parents/caregivers to set appropriate limits and show affection to and support of their children

Special features
* parents and youth learn together
* designed and used with ethnically diverse families in rural and urban settings
* scientifically evaluated and shown to be effective

Cost benefits
* Analysis by the Partnerships in Prevention Science Institute found a return of $9.60 for every dollar spent implementing SFP 10-14.
* Analysis by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy resulted in two benefits: A return of $7.82 for every dollar spent and a cost benefit of $5,805 for each participating youth in SFP 10-14.
